Draft Island Plan examination begins

20 September 2010

Jersey’s first ever independent public examination of a draft Island Plan begins during the week commencing Monday 20 September 2010.

Called an ‘Examination in Public’ (EiP), the outcome of the 3 week examination will help Planning and Environment Minister, Senator Freddie Cohen, shape the new Island Plan.

The examination is being carried out by independent planning inspectors, Chris Shepley and Alan Langton, who will chair discussion around the major issues of concern that have emerged from consultation on the draft Island Plan.

The programme for the examination is based around a number of themes over the first 2 weeks, before it focuses on specific sites of controversy in the final week.

Participation in the examination is by invitation only, based on those organisations and members of the public who have commented on the draft plan and expressed a wish to be involved. The sessions are open to the public to observe proceedings, but not to take part in the discussion, in the same way that people can attend and watch States sittings.

The examination begins on Tuesday 21 September at 10am in the Member’s Room of the Société Jersiaise. Discussion on the first day will focus on the strategic policies of the draft plan and touch on issues of climate change and the location of development in the Island over the next 10 years.

The EiP will take place between Tuesday 21 September and Friday 8 October in the Members Room, Société Jersiaise, Pier Road (except for one day on 6 October, which will held at the Audio Visual Theatre, Jersey Museum).
