The Jersey Child Protection Committee is presenting a new merit award to 3 professionals who have made a major contribution to JCPC training and development work over the past year at the Health and Social Services awards ceremony on Friday 15 October.
In addition, 13 people who deliver child protection training within their own agencies are to be given a 'Training for Trainers' award and 11 people qualified to supervise on child protection issues will receive a 'Supervision Skills in Child Protection' award.
JCPC independent chair Mike Taylor said “The merit awards are new this year, to give recognition to individuals who have made a major contribution to our training and development work over the years.”
JCPC merit awards
These new awards recognise individuals who have made a major contribution to JCPC training and development work. The recipients are:
Anne Gray
Anne works for Daycare Registration Services, a department of Education Sport and Culture. She delivers child protection training to those who care for young children in nurseries and in their own home as registered child day carers. Anne also provides child protection training through Highlands to people who intend taking up a career working with children, and is a member of the JCPC training sub-committee.
Independent JCPC chair Mike Taylor said “Her dedication to child protection training over the past 8 years has made a significant contribution to safeguarding children and high quality child care provision in Jersey.”
Nicky Brown
Nicky Brown is a senior youth worker for the Youth Service and has been delivering child protection training to youth service staff and volunteers for more than 8 years. Independent JCPC chair Mike Taylor said “Her contribution to the training pool and to child protection training as a past member of the training sub-committee has proved invaluable. For this significant contribution, the JCPC would like to express its gratitude.”
Jean Andrews
Jean is the independent reviewing officer for child protection conferences and looked-after child reviews. For the past 8 years, Jean has assisted the JCPC’s training officer Jan Brotherton in facilitating training on child protection conferences.
Independent JCPC chair Mike Taylor said “The greater the participants at a child protection conference understand their roles and responsibilities and the decision-making process, the better the outcomes for the child and family. The JCPC would like to thank Jean for her contribution.”
'Training for Trainers' award
To meet an increasing need, in 2009 13 people undertook training to enable them to deliver foundation level child protection training within their own agencies, which include:
- the Youth Service
- Jersey Women’s Refuge
- the General Hospital
- Family Nursing and Home Care
Participants attended a 4 day NSPCC course as well as an intense training programme throughout the year, followed by assessment. The JCPC intends to train a further 12 people in 2011.
'Supervision Skills in Child Protection' award
Good quality supervision for people engaged in child protection work is essential to ensure safe practice, a fact highlighted by the JCPC’s serious case review earlier this year.
11 people from a variety of agencies completed a 4 day course in June to enable them to supervise child protection issues. The agencies included:
- the Children’s Service
- Social Services
- HMP La Moye
- Les Amis
- the Education Department
This course has run in alternate years since 2003 and a total of 48 senior professionals have completed training.
