Launch of Architecture Commission

05 March 2010

The Minister for Planning and Environment has announced the creation of the Jersey Architecture Commission to provide independent guidance on design.

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Senator Freddie Cohen, said “It remains an important aim to increase design standards in the built environment and the value of architecture in Jersey. As a result I have formed an Architecture Commission to provide independent guidance and to further the aim of good architecture on the Island. This follows on from successful initiatives such as the creation of the Jersey Design Guide and promotion of good architecture through Architecture Week.”

Members of the new Commission have been appointed following a competitive interview process. The Commission brings together a wealth of expertise in architecture, planning and urban design. The Chairman of the Panel is Jersey resident Marcus Binney, CBE, Hon FRIBA, an architectural writer and critique of international repute.

Mr Binney said “I am delighted to take the role of Chairman and to play a part in the creation of this important body for the Island of Jersey.  Architecture is a key feature of the Island - past, present and future - and I am very much looking forward to furthering sensitive, good quality design”.
