Maritime Museum wall to be renovated

18 March 2010

The Port of Jersey will be carrying out vital repairs to the 108 year old northern granite façade of the old Harbours warehouse building which is currently home to the Maritime Museum.

The building, which is maintained by Jersey Harbours, runs from the eaves of the warehouse building to ground level and a large crack was discovered during an annual building survey. Scaffolding will be going up over the next 2 weeks and the urgent work to the external wall on the marina side of the museum will start in early March 2010 and is expected to last around 12 weeks.

Jersey Harbours Technical Services Manager, Ray Hine, said “The building has suffered settlement damage over a period of time. This is particularly apparent in the north western corner where large cracks have appeared on both the internal and external faces of the gable wall. The repairs are absolutely vital to ensure that further settlement is minimised and the structural integrity of the wall is assured.

"There will be a considerable amount of scaffolding to ensure that all areas of the wall can be safely reached. The work is on the harbours side of the museum however, so there will not be any traffic problems or any disruption to people going to the Maritime Museum, mariners using the marinas near by or visitors enjoying the area.”

The historical building, where the renovation work will take place, is a former cargo store which was built in 1902. Jersey Harbours Commercial Director, Myra Shacklady said “This work is all part of Jersey Harbours' continuing programme of maintenance to protect our valuable and often beautiful harbour areas. We take the preservation of our local heritage very seriously and work hard to ensure that these areas remain safe, and functional parts of our maritime environment for the enjoyment and benefit of all who use them."
