Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is putting up 5 new bus shelters at various locations over the next 2 weeks. This is the first phase of increasing the provision of bus shelters in the Island.
Work commences on Thursday 9 December erecting the first of the 5 bus shelters on La Rue à Don in Gorey, at the junction with La Rue Horman. Following on from that, shelters will be put up at Jambart Lane in St Clement, on both sides of the road at Bel Royal and in Queens Road.
TTS wants more people to choose to travel by bus and is making improvements to the bus service to make it a more attractive option. They are working with Connex to provide improvements to routes and scheduling and have just recently introduced evening buses to St Peter and St Ouen and an earlier morning bus on the route 25 to St John, St Mary and St Lawrence. Providing more bus shelters is another step in this programme.
Improving the bus service is just one element of the recently approved Sustainable Transport Policy which aims to reduce traffic levels by 15%. Over the next 5 years and into the future, TTS will also be improving facilities for cycling and walking and developing travel plans for the work place and schools to help encourage people to move to a more sustainable mode of travel, at least some of the time.
