New hospital director to be appointed

16 April 2010

A hospital director is to be appointed at the General Hospital. This post was one of the key recommendations in the Verita Report.

Speaking about the appointment, incoming Chief Executive for Health and Social Services, Julie Garbutt, said “As the process to appoint a substantive hospital director will take some time, an interim director has been appointed to support hospital staff in delivering efficiencies as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR), to provide leadership for the next phase of the Integrated Care Record (ICR) programme and to address issues of bed capacity.

“Contractual arrangements are now being finalised, so no further details about the successful candidate can be released at the moment. A number of high calibre candidates recently visited the Hospital and were interviewed. Negotiations are now underway to secure an interim appointment. We hope the successful appointee will take up their duties in early May for  approximately 6 months."

The interim post holder will work closely with the directorate managers, clinical directors and senior colleagues in HSSD to lead the General Hospital through the challenging months ahead.

Mrs Garbutt added “Looking ahead, I am keen to get the recruitment to the substantive post underway as quickly as possible, and I look forward to working closely with clinicians and my senior management team at the General Hospital on this process.”

The appointment of the substantive post will be progressed by the Appointments Commission and Julie Garbutt, when she joins the States on 1 June 2010.

The Health and Social Services Minister, Deputy Anne Pryke said "I have looked carefully at the recommendations made in the Verita Report and am keen to act on them in order to make the General Hospital as safe, efficient and as well run as possible. This is an ongoing process, and one that all the senior managers in HSSD are actively engaging with.”
