Seat belts problem identified in road check

30 April 2010

29 people have been asked to attend a parish hall enquiry following a road check on Wednesday 28 April 2010 in St Peter. Most of these were drivers or passengers who were not wearing a seat belt.

1,357 vehicles passed through the road check, Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) officers impounded a commercial vehicle and issued 16 defect notices.

The impounded vehicle was a fully laden pickup truck which had a number of serious safety defects including worn steering, oil leaks and an insecure exhaust system. It is also suspected the vehicle was overloaded.

Drivers of another 15 vehicles were issued with defect notices asking them to present their vehicles at DVS with the defects rectified. The defects were mainly:

  • corroded / damaged bodywork and exhaust systems
  • poorly maintained lighting
  • oil leaks

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir, said “This was a very productive check where by working with our colleagues in the Honorary Police, we uncovered a variety of defects which when rectified will mean safer vehicles circulating on our roads.

"The number of drivers and passengers found not wearing a seat belt is a concern. It is a legal requirement and is the simplest and most effective means of reducing the risk of injury or death for occupants of motor vehicles."
