4 drivers are to be prosecuted following a St Helier road check last Friday.
1,675 vehicles passed through the road check; 8 were impounded and 1 driver was arrested. A further 22 drivers have been issued with defect rectification notices, and 2 additional drivers have to produce their driving documents at police headquarters.
Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS), the States Police Roads Policing Unit, and the Honorary Police of St Helier joined forces to conduct a road check on La Grande Route de St Jean between 4.30pm and 6pm on Friday 26 March 2010.
1 person, who was found to be driving without a licence or insurance, was arrested when police discovered that he was also wanted for other offences.
2 drivers, whose vehicles were impounded at the check with defective tyres, are being prosecuted, while 2 other drivers had their vehicles impounded for damaged bodywork and oil leaks.
4 additional vehicles were impounded to workshops for repairs to numerous defects including: damaged bodywork, oil leaks, worn steering and tyre replacement.
1 driver is being prosecuted for failure to display a valid windscreen insurance disc, and the driver of a foreign registered vehicle has been told to register her car in Jersey.
In all, 22 drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicles at DVS with defects rectified. Defects included:
- damaged bodywork
- oil leaks
- broken lights
Inspector of Motor Traffic Alan Muir commented "With 8 vehicles impounded and 4 drivers being prosecuted, this proved to be a very busy road check for both the police and DVS examiners. A whole variety of defects and offences were found, and while it’s always disappointing to find vehicles so unroadworthy that they are impounded, I think it shows the authorities are working hard to try and improve the condition of vehicles on the road for the benefit of all road users."
