Stranded islanders brought ashore

15 March 2010

Jersey Fire and Rescue answered two calls for help at the weekend (14 March 2010) to rescue people stranded by the rising tide.

The inshore rescue boat was launched from Fire HQ after 2 young girls were reported stranded on rocks off La Mare slip. Once the rescue boat was launched the 2 girls were quickly located and bought ashore, where they were met by Jersey Coastguard.

Just as the crew was retrieving the rescue boat, another call for assistance was received through Jersey Coastguard that a man was stranded at Elizabeth Castle.

The inshore rescue boat was diverted from La Mare slip and the man was taken from the castle to the quayside.

Jersey Fire and Rescue's crew manager, Craig Channing, is asking people to be extra vigilant and to take note of the state of tide and times of high water when walking on the beach or visiting heritage sites offshore.

He said "As the season changes, more and more people take advantage of the warmer weather and it's important to remember Jersey's high tidal reach. You need to be aware of how quickly you can be cut off. Keeping a watchful eye on the sea around you could very well save your life."
