Foul sewer upgrade on Railway Walk

08 April 2010

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) will be carrying out a major sewer upgrade on the Railway Walk from Monday 12 April, for approximately 11 weeks that will involve some work being carried out at night.

The existing concrete foul sewer, which runs along the Railway Walk between Mont Nicolle Bridge and Mont les Vaux, needs to be replaced because it has been severely damaged due to acid corrosion. Part of the sewer requires complete replacement due to its advanced deterioration and the rest can be repaired by inserting a lining material into the existing sewer. This section will be carried out at night, as the sewers carry less flow at this time.

The £528,000 project will mean the Railway Walk will be closed to the public between 9.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, from Le Chemin des Pietons to Mont Nicolle Bridge. In addition, night time work from 10pm to 7am, will be required for 2 weeks for the relining works, which are expected to start on 4 May. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation for the section of work on Mont les Vaux at night.

Connètable Mike Jackson, Minister for TTS, said "This sewer was in a very poor condition and it is essential that it's upgraded.  Although the works will cause some inconvenience, we will make every effort to minimise the impact and to ensure that the public are kept informed.”
