States Employment Board responds to teachers' vote

The States Employment Board is disappointed at the decision by members of the teachers’ unions, NASUWT and NUT, to vote for industrial action in protest at their pay offer.

The Chief Officer for Education, Sport and Culture, Mario Lundy, says “We don’t yet know the exact form that industrial action would take. But the department will do everything possible to minimise disruption for pupils and their parents during the course of any action by members of the NASUWT and NUT.”

The Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, who chairs SEB says “Teachers have received the same pay offer as other groups – 2% this year and 2% next year. We believe this offer is reasonable in view of the economic situation, which has already had an impact on Jersey. We have to reduce public spending to protect jobs in the future and to get through a difficult and protracted period.

“I am pleased that civil servants, manual workers, police and paramedics have all demonstrated an understanding of the difficult economic times we are facing by accepting the 2-year pay.  The Board hopes other pay groups, including teachers, will follow this lead."
