The road resurfacing project on Victoria Avenue is on schedule for completion in just over 2 weeks' time.
Work has been progressing well and the contractor, P Trant (Jersey) Ltd, (who will be working throughout the next 2 weekends) has assured Transport and Technical Services (TTS) that work is on course for completion on 16 July.
Repairs and improvements
Victoria Avenue was in a poor state of repair, with surface wear cracking, and structural damage below the surface which could only be detected through investigation. When completed this project will have repaired all that damage, as well as replacing most of the 45 year old drainage system which was in poor condition. The 40-year-old lamp columns which were well past their design life, and not energy efficient, have also been replaced.
TTS also took the opportunity to carry out some safety improvements, with adjustments to the central reservation, lengthening the right turn lane into First Tower and improving the sight lines for cars exiting the car parks.
Works provided jobs for local people
It has been a complex project which has provided work for local people both directly and indirectly. The roadworks have involved:
- 12 Island suppliers
- 6 local subcontractors
- 6 Jersey labour agencies to provide the direct labour
- 7 local plant hire companies
- 3 different Island shipping agents and carriers used by the contractor
Connétable Mike Jackson, Minister for Transport and Technical Services said "Living in St Brelade and travelling to and from town as I do, I am well aware of the traffic delays the work has caused for motorists. Lane closures and reduced speed limits have been necessary to allow the work to progress and for the safety of both the travelling public and the workers themselves. The end is now in sight and I would thank the public for their patience and understanding."
