Fiscal stimulus funds for Railway Walk sewer

25 February 2010

The Transport and Technical Services Department has been awarded a total of £528,155 from the fiscal stimulus fund to complete work which will repair and upgrade a major foul sewer in St Brelade.

The existing sewer, which runs along the Railway Walk, was built in 1957 and currently receives sewage from 33 pumping stations serving the west of the Island.  Investigations carried out in 2004 revealed that the sewer was severely damaged due to corrosion caused by acid build up in the pipeline.

In 2005 the most severely affected section of the sewer between Pont Marquet and Le Mont Nicolle Bridge was replaced.  The fiscal stimulus funds will be used to upgrade the remaining section between Le Mont Nicolle Bridge and Le Mont les Vaux which has since deteriorated further.

The project manager, Andy Downie, said “This is a very important sewer which takes the majority of sewage from St Brelade, St Peter, St Ouen and part of St Mary. It’s vital that this sewer be upgraded as it is in critical condition and in very real danger of collapse. The work will require full closure of part the Railway Walk during off-peak hours as well as some night-time work for the operations in Le Mont les Vaux."

The Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, said “This funding not only injects cash into the local economy but allows essential infrastructure work to be carried out.  Our aim with the fiscal stimulus programme is to help companies survive the challenging economic environment and keep islanders employed through the downturn.”

The work is due to start on 6 April 2010 and should be completed within 11 weeks.
