Fiscal stimulus for housing maintenance

28 July 2010

The Housing Department will be able to clear more of its backlog work by bringing forward roof replacements and heating installations across its social housing portfolio, thanks to an allocation from the fiscal stimulus fund.

The work was already planned but without £1,714,793 from the £44 million fiscal stimulus pot it would have had to be delivered over a longer time period because of funding constraints.

Roof replacements and / or installation of new electric heating systems will be undertaken at St Peters Arsenal, Grouville Arsenal, Rosemount Estate, Old St Johns Court, Le Petit Clos Gosset, Gordon Le Breton Close, St Georges Estate, Don Farm, Bashfords Estate, Bingham Court and Le Clos De Balmain.

The Housing Department is aiming to replace old fossil fuel systems with electric ones in 600 homes this year.

Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said “Like the recent fiscal stimulus allocation of £637,000 to replace roofs and upgrade windows at States rental homes, these projects will provide work for local business and labour.”

Housing Minister Deputy Sean Power said “These refurbishments are programmed to be undertaken substantially in 2010 and will significantly increase our investment in the social housing stock. Making homes more energy efficient by increasing insulation levels and switching from unsustainable fossil fuel heating systems are key strategies in ensuring that the social housing stock is efficient to operate in the long term.”
