Butterfly monitoring event

23 March 2011

JBMS logoThe Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS) will stage an event on Saturday 26 March at Howard Davis Farm in Trinity, between 10.30am and 4pm. The event is aimed at members of the public with an interest in the Island's population of butterflies and moths.

The JBMS, now in its seventh year, forms part of the Department of the Environment’s integrated programme of ‘State of the Environment Monitoring’, a schedule of biological monitoring projects that aim to investigate the health of Jersey’s ecosystems.

During Saturday's event, the group will focus on invertebrate activity in Jersey, with talks on local species of moths and butterflies. One of the day's highlights will be a talk from Dr Marc Botham, butterfly ecologist at the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology (CEH). Marc oversees the collation and analysis of the results of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and he will be providing an update on the UK’s situation. In addition, there will be workshops for individuals who would like to take part in Jersey’s own scheme and who would like to learn about local and national butterfly identification skills and survey methods.

Anyone with an interest in butterflies and moths, whatever their level of expertise, is welcome to attend the event. For more details, contact Nina Cornish (441624 or n.cornish@gov.je).
