Launch of children and young people's framework

22 November 2011

Jersey’s first ever Children and Young People’s Strategic Framework has been launched.

The launch coincides with the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day which was established on 20 November 1954 to promote the welfare of all children across the world.

The summary captures the key elements of the full strategic framework which was laid before the States on 6 November 2011. Commissioned by the Children’s Policy Group and developed in consultation with children, young people, parents and professionals the framework sets out a clear vision and 6 objectives for all the Island’s children and young people.

Potential

Deputy Anne Pryke, Chair of the Children’s Policy Group, said “Islanders readily identified much that is great about growing up in Jersey. However, they also said that more needs to be done in some areas if we are to ensure that all children and young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. For example, we need to invest in early intervention services to prevent problems occurring in the first instance; ensure that the outcomes for looked after children and children with special needs are the same as other children; reduce domestic violence and alcohol abuse; provide more vocational opportunities; ensure housing policies; support the wellbeing of children and ensure that children and families have a voice in all the services that affect them.”

By setting out what we want to achieve for children and young people, the framework will support States Departments to work in partnership with other agencies to make better collective decisions about the services and facilities that are needed.

“The Framework is just a starting point. It will feed into the new States Strategic Plan thus influencing future States’ policy relating to children and young people. In addition, now that it has been produced work will start on the development of detailed delivery plans, one for each of the 6 key objectives outlined within the framework."
