Ministers attend Conservative conference

​Assistant Chief Minister, UK and International Relations, Senator Freddie Cohen, and Deputy Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, will represent Jersey at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester between 2 October and 4 October 2011.

During a packed schedule, Senator Cohen will deliver a speech to conference delegates alongside fellow speakers David Gauke MP, Exchequer Secretary to HM Treasury, and Allister Heath, Editor of City A.M.. Senator Cohen will address delegates on Jersey’s role in wealth creation and economic growth within the wider economy of the British Isles.

This is the first year that Jersey Ministers have attended UK party conferences, as part of a wider programme of strengthening political engagement with the UK. During the 3 days in Manchester, Senators Ozouf and Cohen will between them meet a number of Conservative politicians, including: Minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose MP; Minister for the Natural Environment and Fisheries, Richard Benyon MP; Treasury Select Committee member and Deputy Conservative Party Leader, Michael Fallon MP; Cities of London and Westminster MP, Mark Field.

Senator Cohen said “I am delighted to have been asked to address delegates on the valuable contribution that Jersey is able to make to the wider British economy. There is a mutually beneficial relationship between the Island’s economy and the UK economy, and it is important for the future prosperity of Jersey that we continue to maintain this close and productive link.”

Senator Ozouf commented “It is important for Islanders that Jersey Ministers make new contacts and maintain existing relations with UK politicians so that we are better able to represent ourselves on the UK policy issues that affect us. These can be as diverse as healthcare and education through to fisheries and finance.”
