Driver using phone to be prosecuted

17 June 2011

A driver is to be prosecuted for driving while holding a mobile phone, following a road check in St Mary.

The driver was spotted by honorary police when passing through the road check at the St Mary Country Hotel car park between 7.30am and 9.00am on Thursday 16 June 2011.

870 vehicles passed through the check, 32 of which were examined for possible defects and the following were reported.

  • a van with defective brakes was immediately taken off the road
  • 11 other drivers were issued with defect notices
  • 3 drivers were asked to attend Parish Hall enquiries for failing to display a valid insurance disc
  • 5 of the vehicles had lighting defects
  • other defects included oil leaks, broken mirrors, a noisy exhaust, defective bodywork and worn tyres
  • the learner rider of a moped was cautioned for not displaying an ‘L’ plate and told to inform the registration office of his change of address
  • a driver of a medium goods vehicle was suspected of not holding the correct category driving licence and police will continue enquiries with a view to prosecuting the driver

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir commented: “This was another useful check and although the majority of vehicles passing through the check seemed to be in good condition, the defects we did find should have been fairly obvious to the drivers if they had bothered to even do a quick check on their vehicle."
