Green Travel Day

20 September 2011

Green Travel Day is this Thursday 22 September and Transport and Technical Services (TTS) want as many people as possible to leave their cars at home and walk, cycle, catch the bus or car share.

As part of the event there will be a Green Travel Day fair in the Royal Square. The fair opens at 7.45am to greet green travellers with a free cup of coffee. Stalls in the square will feature:

  • footwear
  • bicycles and accessories
  • electric bikes
  • cycle and walking tours
  • scooters
  • bicycle hire
  • bicycle security marking
  • bicycle repairs
  • fitness facilities
  • green travel information and refreshments

The fair will continue throughout the morning and through lunchtime closing at 2.30pm. There will also be a chance to look around one of the double-decker buses which will be parked close to the square in Library Place from noon until 2pm. Jersey Electricity will also have their electric smart car near Hamons in King Street.

Change habits

Commuters are the main target of this campaign as they have the greatest opportunity to change their travel habits. To encourage people to take part in the day and also to have fun, TTS has organised several competitions with prizes donated by stall holders for:

  • most creative green traveller on the day
  • best green travel convert
  • best regular green traveller

There is also a competition for companies and organisations with the prospect of winning an award of up to £1,000 to spend on an initiative that enables or assists green travel for their staff.

Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Connétable Mike Jackson, said: "Green Travel Day is an opportunity for us to appreciate those who are regular green travellers and to encourage those who aren’t, to try green travel for the day with the hope that it will lead to them changing to a greener mode of travel more often.

"It’s great to hear that companies are encouraging their staff to take part. I have heard of a finance company that is closing their car park for the day, another company that is subsidising staff members’ bus fares on the day and our sponsors The Channel Islands Co-operative Society Limited have organised their own staff competition."
