Tackling internet addiction

05 July 2011

Parents and teachers are being invited to a presentation that will highlight potentially addictive behaviour in young people who overuse computer games and the internet.

Canada-based international addiction expert Rick Dubras will be in the Island on Wednesday 13 July 2011 to increase awareness about the issue.

“Computer gaming is not as benign as we’ve been led to believe,” Mr Dubras warns. “The use and progressive overuse of the internet and gaming has been becoming more of a concurrent mental health condition and issue in school drop out, failing grades, increased social isolation and family discord.”

Jon Tarrant, ESC’s E-Safety officer said: “Rick’s lively and informative presentation will provide an invaluable opportunity for parents and professionals to learn about these issues and the results of positive interventions with young people who are compulsive players of online games or non-stop users of Facebook.”

The event will take place in the Haute Vallée Theatre at 6pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
