Latest employment report published

Jersey’s labour market report for June 2011 has been published. The report is published every 6 months and covers key aspects of both public and private sector total employment.

The labour market report for June 2011 shows that: 

  • 56,890 people were employed in Jersey, an increase of 740 compared to a year earlier
  • the private sector saw an increase in employment of 840 compared with June 2010 and the public sector recorded a decrease of 100 
  • 88% of the total were employed in the private sector and 12% were in the public sector
  • the increase in private sector employment was driven by the wholesale and retail sector (up by 420 on an annual basis)
  • the finance sector recorded its first increase in employment for more than 2 years, up by 50 on an annual basis and by 140 in first 6 months of 2011
  • the private sector service industries saw an increase in employment of more than 300 on an annual basis, more than half of whom were engaged in single-person businesses
  • in the private sector, compared with June 2010, the number of locally qualified staff increased by +1,170, j-category employees remained substantially constant, non-locally qualified staff decreased by 320
