Millennium Town Park opening

14 October 2011

The new Millennium Town Park, opposite the old Odeon cinema, will open to the public on Saturday 29 October.

The new park will bring an area of much needed green space to the north east of town and is expected to be particularly popular with families and residents of the area who do not have gardens.

Contractors working for Transport and Technical Services (TTS) started on site at the beginning of the year and since then have worked quickly to transform the former car park into a new, contemporary park that meets the needs of the community.

The States originally approved the creation of a new town park in 2000 following a petition from 16,400 people. Difficulties with relocating the parking facilities meant that approval for the eventual plans was only given in February 2011.

Much of the site was a former gas works and about half of the project time was taken up with remediation or cleaning up of the land so that it was fit to be used as a park.

To ensure the park meets the needs of the community, TTS and the contractor held extensive consultation exercises throughout summer last year.  As many as possible of the features put forward in the consultation were incorporated in the final design.

TTS Minister Connétable Mike Jackson said: “I am delighted that we will be able to open the park on 29 October. I know that a lot of hard work has gone into making it happen.  For a small park, it has a lot of features and amenities for all the family to enjoy”.

More details of what will be happening to mark the opening of the park will be publicised soon.
