States tugboat update

08 September 2011

The States tugboat, the Duke of Normandy, is now undergoing repairs in the A & P Shipyard in Falmouth.

The vessel suffered damage to its hull after an incident just outside St Helier Harbour on Friday 2 September 2011.

An initial inspection by divers in Falmouth has shown the vessel suffered 3 small holes to its hull and slight damage to 2 interior tanks. The vessel will be moved to dry dock today (Thursday 8 September) for permanent repairs and is expected to return to Jersey next week.

Jersey Harbours is carrying out its own internal investigation as to the cause of the incident and as a matter of course, MECAL, the vessel’s classification company, has also been informed and will be compiling its own report.

An initial report is likely to be submitted to MECAL and the Marine Accident Investigation Bureau within the next 10 days and its findings will be made public in due course.

As this is an ongoing investigation no further comment will be made at this stage until the report findings are published. In the meantime, Port of Jersey can confirm that no crew members have been suspended and that costs incurred for the repair work will be dealt with by Port of Jersey’s insurance company.
