Culture MP John Whittingdale to visit

27 May 2011

The chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, John Whittingdale OBE, will visit Jersey on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 June 2011.

Mr Whittingdale, who is the Conservative MP for Maldon, is also Treasurer of the Channel Islands All Party Parliamentary Group and Vice Chairman of the 1922 Committee.

There is a busy agenda for the visit and Mr Whittingdale will meet the Lieutenant-Governor, the Bailiff and ministers. He will also visit Mont Orgueil Castle and the Jersey Archive.

He is hoping to learn more about the Island and will also attend meetings to discuss broadcasting, e-gaming and the possibility of using Jersey as a base for Olympic athletes to train.

The Assistant Chief Minister, UK and International Relations, Senator Freddie Cohen said, “Mr Whittingdale has been a friend of Jersey for many years. Furthering our close relationships with influential UK politicians is essential to promoting Jersey’s interests. I am looking forward to talks covering a wide range of exciting topics.”

Deputy Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, welcomes Mr Whittingdale’s visit: “Jersey’s historic links with the United Kingdom are important and this visit offers an excellent opportunity to build on our mutually beneficial relationship.”
