Nurses invited back to practice

​Nurses in Jersey who have not practised for some time are being invited to 2 open sessions which explain how they can get back into the profession.

The sessions are aimed at Islanders who are either already registered nurses, or whose registration has lapsed, but who have not practised nursing recently, with the areas of specialism being general adult nursing and mental health.

The 'Return to Practice' programme will start in May next year, run by the nurse education centre at Health and Social Services.

The head of nursing and midwifery education at Health and Social Services, Julie Mesny, said "We are holding the sessions on 23 and 24 November in the education centre in the hospital, and we hope that anyone interested will come along, if they are a registered nurse, but haven't worked as a nurse for some time. All we need interested people to bring with them is evidence of a current or prior registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.”

Chief Nurse Rose Naylor added "The course is a great opportunity for nurses living in Jersey to re-enter clinical practice as a safe and competent practitioner."

The course will consist of around 150 hours of theory, and 150 hours of clinical practice. Successful applicants will also have the opportunity to undertake supervised practice in an area related to their previous experience. Each person will also have a personal tutor, and excellent job opportunities.

The Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Anne Pryke, added "As a former nurse, I know what a rewarding and challenging career nursing is, and I hope people who have taken a career break from the profession will come along and get to know more about nursing in Jersey now. This is an important opportunity for us not only to recruit people who want to restart their nursing career, but also as part of the department's commitment to develop local workforce capacity."
