Housing and Work Law approved

​​The new Control of Housing and Work law has now been approved by the Privy Council and was registered in Jersey’s Royal Court last week (Friday 26 October). This means the Law is expected to come into force in February 2013.

Under the new law, people moving to Jersey or those who already live in the Island but are changing job or moving house, will need to obtain a Registration Card. This card will replace the Social Security card and it will have to be shown to new employers and when purchasing or leasing property.

The new Law aims to bring in more effective controls over migrants working in the Island and streamline existing processes. A Population Register is also being introduced.

Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Paul Routier, said “I am pleased the Law has now been ratified by the Privy Council and registered in the Court, as this legislation is essential in achieving our strategic objectives of limiting immigration and securing employment for locally qualified people.”

A public information campaign, providing further guidance for individuals and businesses, will be launched nearer to the time of the introduction of the new Law.
