Jersey Property Holdings has submitted an outline planning application for the Sumerland and ambulance station sites, proposing to provide affordable homes for Islanders.
The sites have been identified as surplus to operational need because of the proposed relocation of the States of Jersey Police and the future relocation of the Ambulance and Fire Service.
The application proposes 170 units in a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, along with a small number of 3 bedroom town houses.
The application meets the requirements of Policy H1 of the Island Plan 2011, which says there must be a minimum of 150 units of affordable accommodation on States owned land, above and beyond normal planning obligations.
The Housing Department has been consulted about the mix of accommodation proposed and the design and layout of the submitted scheme, and is supportive of the application.
Jersey Property Holdings has submitted separate applications, believing the schemes can be delivered as 1 development or in 2 phases, depending on need.
The schemes will provide a high quality development opportunity that supports the Environment Department’s objectives for urban regeneration as part of the North of St Helier Master Plan.
The Assistant Minister for Treasury and Resources, Deputy Eddie Noel, says “Jersey Property Holdings has worked with local architects, Naish Waddington and other Island based consultants, to produce exciting proposals in a very short timescale.
“I believe these developments will provide not only much needed affordable and social housing, but will also contribute to the regeneration of the north of St Helier.
“We will continue to look for opportunities to release land for both social and affordable housing while also generating income for Islanders.”
