Pupils enter the Dragons' Den

13 November 2012

This week almost 650 Island secondary school students are taking part in activities organised for Global Entrepreneurship Week. It is the fifth year that Economic Development has supported the week, which runs from 12 to 16 November.

The activities are being facilitated by Hi5, a locally based company led by Will Carnegie which runs team building activities and leadership training.

The day’s events, which use a similar format to the BBC’s Dragons' Den programme, are supported by mentors from the business community who help the students develop their ideas. The day ends with the students presenting their business cases to the mentors, who take on the role of dragons.

Economic Development Minister, Senator Alan Maclean, said “These enterprise days could not go ahead without the support of mentors from the business community who give up their time to help the students with their ideas and business cases. This is a really valuable forum for students to gain exposure to business thinking from local entrepreneurs.”

The theme of the week for for 2012 is ‘Pass it On!’ Organisers hope that events will encourage businesses to pass on the practical help and support needed by individuals who are considering setting up their own business.
