Reminder to check smoke alarms

14 February 2012

The Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people to check their smoke alarms after they were called to a fire at a property in St Lawrence late on Monday night.

The residents had a working smoke alarm which alerted them to the fire, however, 1 person was trapped because of the location of the fire. Another person managed to escape through the smoke and get an extinguisher to put out the fire. The person who had been trapped was then able to get out.

One fire engine was originally dispatched from the station, but another fire engine responding to a separate incident had to be diverted and a further fire engine was requested en route. On arrival it was confirmed that the fire was out and that everyone was safe.

Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager, Ryan Hall, said that the incident was a classic example of the importance of having a working smoke alarm.
