The States of Jersey is supporting a scheme that offers incentives to small businesses and charities providing summer work for undergraduates.
Employers who have summer work or projects appropriate for a university student to help with are being encouraged to take part in the Undergraduate Internship Scheme. It provides an opportunity for companies to tap into the talents of the Island’s most gifted young people and give students the opportunity to gain real work experience.
Any business can apply to take part in the scheme, however those with a turnover below the £300,000 per year GST threshold and registered charities are eligible for a grant of £1,000 towards the cost of employing an undergraduate for 8 weeks.
Careers Jersey’s Work Related Learning Manager, Sue Walsh, said “We would like to hear from any employers who have summer work or projects that would benefit from the talents of our many local undergraduates. The scheme covers all sectors of the economy and examples of projects undertaken in the past include:
- developing new IT software
- websites
- modelling CO2 emissions
- marketing work
- developing an online database
- organising the annual Careers Fair
“It is increasingly important that we create good career opportunities for returning graduates and this scheme enables employers to identify potential future employees and for students to see that the Island offers a wide range of exciting career opportunities.”
Careers Jersey provides a matching service, sending employers details of several undergraduates who have the skills they are looking for. Candidates are interviewed and the company decides on the successful applicant. “I am confident not only that the students can bring a fresh perspective to work challenges, but also that the placements will develop their skills for future employment on Jersey,” said Mrs Walsh.
