Taxi rate increases agreed at below inflation

​The Minister for Transport and Technical Services (TTS), Deputy Kevin Lewis, is pleased that negotiations with the Jersey Taxi Drivers Association (JTDA) have resulted in an agreement for the rank taxis drivers to absorb half of inflation costs and limit their increase to an average of 2.5%.

Every year, TTS reviews the cost of controlled taxi-cabs (rank taxis) against any rises in the cost of living.  Between March 2011 and March 2012 the rise in costs was 5%.  This figure, the RPI (Taxi), is calculated by the States Statistics Unit and takes into account particular costs associated with the taxi industry.

The rise in charges for the rank taxis will come into effect on 30 July 2012.  TTS does not control the fares charged by the private hire taxi companies (restricted taxis, which are predominantly pre-booked by telephone), they are free to set their own charges.

The Minister for TTS said “I think we have reached a good compromise.  We have to be fair to both the public and to the drivers who have experienced rising costs over the last year.”
