Back to Work trainees transform landscape for Centre Point

04 July 2013

With the help of five jobseekers who recently completed Back to Work’s Environmental Employability Training Scheme with the National Trust, Centre Point Trust is having an area of unused waste ground transformed into a vegetable plot and greenhouse which will be constructed from recycled plastic bottles.

The Chief Executive Officer of Centre Point Trust, Jane Moy, said it was wonderful to see first-hand the new skills and experience the volunteers had been able to apply to the Centre Point plot “We have been extremely impressed with the volunteers who have helped us with this project.

"Not only have they have taken our ideas and suggestions into account, but they have also used their own initiative which has resulted in lots of different improvements that we had not even considered.

"It’s been great having them on board, and we are very grateful for both the time that they have given us and all their hard work.”

The Environmental Scheme Mentor, John McLaughlin, added “Creating a vegetable plot and greenhouse requires quite a lot of skill such as carpentry, weeding, irrigation and the preparation of soil for planting.

"I would encourage local employers to contact Back to Work if they are looking for candidates with these kinds of transferrable skills and recent relevant experience.’’

The initiative is among a number of projects being run by Back to Work to improve the employability of locally qualified jobseekers.
