A report has been published that sets out the public’s responses to a consultation on the future of education.
A document entitled ‘Learning For Tomorrow’s World’, issued in July 2011, included a vision for the future and asked a series of questions about the different stages of education, from early years to adult learning. Members of the public submitted responses and their comments have already been incorporated in the department’s ongoing work.
ESC Minister Deputy Patrick Ryan said “I would like to thank all those who made submissions and attended the consultation meetings. The consultation exercise has been a valuable part of the ongoing debate about our education system. This report is a summary that sets out Islanders’ concerns and also explains what progress is being made to address them.
“I am pleased to report that the majority of questions and concerns raised by the consultation are issues that professionals across our service have already been striving to address in the course of their existing work.”
Some of the initiatives include:
- creation of a new, modern apprentice scheme called Trackers, which was launched in September 2012
- a change to household income for the assessment of university grants
- a plan to provide more vocational opportunities for 14-16 year olds
- reviews of core subjects (maths, English and science)
Deputy Ryan added: “In some areas, most notably the structure of secondary education, there is no clear consensus about the way forward. This is not a surprise but it is an important area and I intend to carry out further analysis to ensure Jersey has an education system that is fit for the future.”
