Granville Bay fishing meeting

Officers from the Department of the Environment and Jersey fishermen are meeting with colleagues from France today (Wednesday 26 June) to discuss fisheries management.

The meetings, which are being held in Jersey over the next two days, are being attended by representatives from the French and Jersey governments, as well as Breton, Norman and Jersey fishermen. They’re part of on-going discussions established under the Granville Bay Treaty.

Items on the agenda include:

Ray/skate and whelk management;
the interactions between different fishing methods;
the impact of European legislation and policy on the Bay of Granville.

Fishermen from Normandy and Jersey are also using the meetings to complete this year’s annual local lobster audit which was accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council as a sustainable fishery. Lobster fishery achieved this prestigious recognition in 2011 and will undergo its second annual audit this year.
