Gloucester Street improvement works

24 June 2013

Resurfacing works will start on Gloucester Street on Wednesday 26 June 2013 and continue until Wednesday 17 July 2013.

Approximately 370m of Gloucester Street will be strengthened and resurfaced from the junction with the Esplanade to the junction with Savile Street. As part of these works Transport and Technical Services (TTS) are also making pedestrian and road improvements. TTS has appointed Pallot Ltd to undertake the £335,000 resurfacing contract with TTS staff carrying out the pedestrian and highway improvements.

Gloucester Street is a very busy road with many businesses, residents and the hospital nearby. To keep traffic flowing and minimise disruption, most of the resurfacing work will be carried out between 9am and 4pm, outside peak travel times. Lanes will be closed but one will remain open at all times.

Gloucester Street will be closed for five evenings from 7.30pm until midnight. These closures will be at:
  • the junction of Gloucester Street and the Parade from Wednesday 26 June to Friday 28 June
  • the junction of Gloucester Street and Newgate Street and the junction of Gloucester Street and the Parade from Thursday 4 July to Friday 5 July.

During the weekend of 6 and 7 July, two lanes of Gloucester Street will be closed with one remaining open from 8am to 9pm. This will provide working room for deep strengthening works between Newgate Street and the Esplanade. This section of the road is in very poor condition and requires greater repair than other sections.

The highway and safety improvements can be completed without road closures and with minimal disruption to traffic. These works have already started and will finish in August. They include:

  • widening the footway opposite the hospital on Gloucester Street and installing cycle parking
  • relocating the pedestrian crossing on the Parade to outside the Hospital entrance
  • narrowing Gloucester Street east of the Parade to provide additional parking
  • improving pedestrian crossing facilities at the Gloucester Street end of Newgate Street.

Major stakeholders have been consulted, including the emergency services. All businesses along the route and the diversion routes will remain open as usual.

TTS will be doing their utmost to minimise disruption and delays to motorists and any disturbance to householders and apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused by these essential infrastructure maintenance works.
