Home Energy Scheme expanded

02 September 2013

More Islanders will now qualify for free insulation following the expansion of the Home Energy Scheme. The Energy Efficiency Service is expanding its 100% grant-funded scheme to include Islanders over 65 with limited savings.

This expanded scheme, which will be launched on Wednesday 4 September at West Centre, aims to help Islanders lower their energy bills and keep warmer, while also reducing Jersey’s carbon footprint.

The eligibility criteria for the Home Energy Scheme are now:
  • individual in receipt of Income Support, or
  • individual registered on the Westfield 65+ Health Plan, or
  • individual in receipt of the Food Costs Bonus or
  • individuals over 65 with less than £50,000 in savings if married or co-habiting or £30,000 savings if living alone.
The Chairman of the Jersey Energy Trust, Sir Nigel Broomfield, said “We’re delighted to be expanding our criteria, and look forward to welcoming even more applicants onto the scheme. I would encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to apply and to spread the word to friends and neighbours who may also be able to benefit.”

Lower household fuel bills

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Deputy Rob Duhamel, said “The home improvements that are offered through this scheme not only help to lower fuel bills, but also have the added benefit of helping to reduce Jersey’s carbon dioxide emissions.”

The 100% grant means that any work carried out, such as the installation of loft insulation, draught proofing or cavity wall insulation, is done at no cost to the applicant. Both owner-occupiers and tenants can apply, but States Housing Department properties are not eligible as there is already a refurbishment programme underway for these properties.

Islanders are being invited to come along to West Centre on Wednesday 4 September where the Energy Efficiency Service will be based for the day with the Greener Living Trailer to help launch this expansion. Staff will be on hand between 9:30 am and 4 pm to discuss the scheme, as well as offer free independent advice to islanders on being more energy efficient as a whole.

Anyone who wants information on becoming more energy efficient, or who believes they may be eligible for assistance through the Home Energy Scheme can alternatively contact the Energy Efficiency Service.
