Income Support sanctions take effect

New regulations come into effect today [Tuesday 15 October] which will reduce the Income Support available to people who leave a job without good reason.

The regulations, approved by the States on 8 October, mean that anyone who leaves paid employment without a good reason will be unable to claim the adult component of Income Support for 13 weeks.

The aim of the regulations is to encourage people to take full financial responsibility for their actions and to ensure that they have thought through the consequences of leaving work.

Speak to Social Security before leaving work

Anyone who is thinking of leaving their job and may need to claim Income Support as a result should speak to Social Security before making a decision.

The new sanction is one of a number of changes made to the Income Support regulations to strengthen the department’s ability to respond to the minority of jobseekers who fail to look for work or to participate in training or placements which could improve their chance to find paid employment.
