02 May 2013

Steve Bailey, a well-known figure in Jersey’s travel and tourism industry, will be Games Director for the 2015 NatWest Island Games to be held in Jersey in two year’s time.

Mr Bailey was a senior manager at Condor Ferries for 15 years and worked for airlines KLMuk, Air UK and Aurigny before that. He will take up the two-year post in August 2013.

As Games Director, Mr Bailey will be responsible for supporting the Organising Committee and will focus on planning and delivering all operational aspects of the event.

This will include working with the associations of the 14 participating sports, with sponsors and the other 23 member islands.

His remit also covers:

  • transport
  • accommodation
  • infrastructure and equipment needs
  • opening, closing and medal ceremonies
  • spectator services and facilities
  • security
  • volunteers

The Chairman of the 2015 Organising Committee, Phil Austin, said “This is a senior executive role and is extremely important for the delivery a successful Island Games for Jersey. I am delighted we have been able to appoint someone of Steve Bailey’s calibre.

"Not only does he have the right combination of experience and skills, but he also has strong connections with the tourism, sporting and business communities, which will be invaluable in the run-up to the Games.”

Mr Bailey said “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a unique chance to help create a landmark event the Island can be proud of. The Organising Committee have said they want the 2015 Island Games to be the ‘best ever’ and I couldn’t agree more.

"I look forward to playing my part in creating a successful vibrant event that will engage the whole Island and have a lasting impact.”
