New social housing development starts

19 March 2013

The States of Jersey has bought land at Langtry Gardens in St Saviour which will be used for 80 new social housing homes.

Contracts were passed in the Royal Court on Friday 8 March 2013 and work started on the development this week.

The development comprises 48 apartments and 32 bungalows. When completed in 2015, the apartments will be added to the Housing Department’s social housing portfolio and the bungalows will be owned by the Parish of St Saviour.

Allocation of all the properties will be made through the Affordable Housing Gateway to applicants who have been assessed as being in need of social housing and are on the waiting list.

Housing Minister, Deputy Andrew Green, said “We are delighted to be able to start work on this very important project which will provide a significant number of new rental homes which will benefit both existing tenants and new applicants from the waiting list.

“There will be a mixture of social rented, owner occupied cottages and a privately operated care home is also planned for the site. I would like to see more of these mixed tenure developments in the future. I am delighted to be able to provide social rented customers with the opportunity to move into one of these new purpose built properties.”

The project plan aims for the 48 apartments to be complete in July 2015 with the bungalows being complete by the end of October 2015.

Assistant Treasury and Resources Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “We are pleased to support the construction of new social housing which will improve the lives of many Islanders.

“This development will provide much needed social housing, while also giving a welcome boost to the construction industry, and is one of the projects the States agreed to fund in 2012. I look forward to working with the Housing Minister on other developments of this kind in the coming months.

“The Fiscal Policy Panel recommended that we should accelerate fiscal support for the economy through increased short-term capital expenditure this year.”
