New hospital consultant surgeon

28 May 2013

A new consultant surgeon with a special interest in foot, ankle and spinal surgery has been appointed at the General Hospital.

Mr Ziad Haddad, an experienced orthopaedic general surgeon, first worked at the General Hospital as a staff grade, starting in 1999, and subsequently as an associate specialist from 2005. He has now become a consultant, following specialist training in the UK to be able to offer as many surgical procedures to Islanders as possible.

He is one of three orthopaedic consultants at the General Hospital who work to treat Islanders who need all kinds of orthopaedic procedures.

Whilst his specialist interests are foot, ankle and spinal surgery, Mr Haddad also performs joint replacements and general orthopaedics. His work is helping to reduce waiting times for Islanders who need operations such as hip and knee replacements.

Mr Haddad is able to perform a wide range of surgeries and in some cases, this will mean that Jersey patients who need simpler spinal surgery will not need to go to the UK for treatment, which will help reduce waiting times.

Mr Haddad and his team work alongside a small team of specialist surgeons from Queen’s Square Hospital in central London.  Some Jersey patients who require more complex surgery are referred to the team at Queen’s Square, while simpler cases are treated on island, with Queen’s Square surgeons coming to Jersey to work alongside Mr Haddad in those procedures.

Director of Operations at the General Hospital, Angela Body, said “We are delighted that Islanders who require some types of spinal surgery will be able to benefit from Mr Haddad’s skills. We are pleased that his work, that of the whole orthopaedic team, and the team at Queen’s Square Hospital will assist local patients who need surgery. We want the process for patients to be smooth, and on-island wherever possible. The skills of the local and UK teams we employ are invaluable and help us to provide the highest standard of care possible for surgery.”

Background

Mr Haddad qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Jordan University Hospital, and undertook a trauma fellowship in Oxford in 1997 and trained in general orthopaedics, joint replacement and spinal surgery at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Orth) in February 2011, and then spent a one year fellowship in Cardiff University Hospital, where he gained further training in foot and ankle surgery as well as further experience in paediatric and spinal surgery.
