Charge for plasterboard recycling

A new charge of recycling plasterboard will be introduced by the Transport and Technical Services Department in April 2014.

 

From Monday 7 April 2014, commercial operators will only be able to deliver clean plasterboard to La Collette. This means that contaminants such as foam backing, wood and concrete will have to be removed at source and disposed of separately. Clean plasterboard will be received for recycling at a charge of £101.40 per tonne (a charge of £96.57 per tonne plus GST).

 

The clean plasterboard received at La Collette will be exported to the UK for specialist recycling.

 

TTS have been running numerous trials to understand how best to receive, collect and export plasterboard for recycling and the new charge will meet the haulage and export costs. The charge is included in the 2014 Fees and Charges issued yesterday by Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is a new charge for the recycling of plasterboard.

 

Transport and Technical Services Recycling Manager Emma Richardson-Calladine said "Plasterboard contains high levels of sulphate which means it cannot be sent for energy recovery or landfill in Jersey. Exporting plasterboard for recycling is our only sustainable solution but due to the specialist nature of the material, this is a costly process. By announcing the charge now, the building industry has time to prepare for both the charge and change in practice which will start in April. During the next few months, we will be speaking with the industry to ensure that all of our customers are aware of the changes."
