Planning compromise may save St Helier seawall

05 July 2013

A significant section of St Helier’s old sea wall may be saved if minor changes to plans for Esplanade Quarter are agreed.

Save Our Shoreline and others recently raised concerns about the impact of a proposed new Esplanade office development on the old sea wall nearby.

The Minister for Planning and Environment arranged a meeting between Save our Shoreline and the States of Jersey Development Company (SoJDC) representatives yesterday to look at a possible solutions.

Deputy Rob Duhamel said the meeting had been very positive. "I was pleased to be able to sit down with both the applicant and members of Save Our Shoreline to discuss the matter.  Some interesting points were covered and I believe that we have been able to agree on a better way forward for the Island."

At the meeting, managing director of SoJDC, Lee Henry, presented a drawing showing that a significant portion of the sea wall could be retained, if small adjustments are made to the current office scheme plan.

The Planning Minister is currently considering this minor change and will issue a decision shortly.
