Building work starts on new primary school in St Martin

18 July 2013

A turf turning ceremony is being held tomorrow (Friday 19 July) to mark the start of building work on the new St Martin’s Primary School.

The existing school and nursery was the subject of a detailed assessment in 2008 which concluded that the premises were well below the minimum space standards with no further capacity on the site to extend the facilities.

Preparatory work has now been completed and the contract for the main building work starts on 29 July.

The Assistant Treasury Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “I am pleased we can now move ahead with this work. The new building will improve conditions for current and future generations of parish children.

“It will also help to boost the construction industry and the wider economy, along with the other capital projects in our agreed programme of work.”

Ceremony

The Education, Sport and Culture Minister, Deputy Patrick Ryan, said “I am delighted that the new building is under way. This is an exciting prospect for the school and community.

“All involved are looking forward to the opening of a purpose-built school that will provide a modern, high quality learning environment for the children of St Martin in future.”

The turf turning ceremony on Friday will see Deputy Noel lifting the first shovel that will ultimately result in a new primary school and nursery.

The new school is scheduled to open early in 2015.
