New careers event for university students

Students are being encouraged to register now for Careers Jersey’s new event, Study Horizons. The free evening event, which aims to help students find out about degree courses overseas, online and in the Island, will take place on 7 November 2013 at the Royal Yacht Hotel. However, spaces are limited so early registration is advised.

 

More than 20 exhibitors from around the world will be available to give advice and guidance to prospective students, including international universities, on-Island degree providers, the Open University, student finance experts and career advisers. In addition, there will be an opportunity for attendees to hear a presentation on the study option of their choice.

 

The event is designed to show which higher education opportunities are available outside the UK, including degree courses and post-graduate courses available in the Island and online.

 

Andy Gibbs, Head of Lifelong Learning and Skills, said “The majority of Jersey students who go to university currently do so in the UK. As fees go up, people are increasingly looking at other locations for higher education. Our aim is to provide a range of information in one place to help students and parents who might be considering different options. Study Horizons will focus on three specific study routes: online, on-Island and studying abroad. This event will complement our traditional Higher Education Fair, held in March, where UK universities are mainly represented.”

 

One organisation attending Study Horizons to advise students who are interested in studying abroad is The Student World.

 

Event Manager at The Student World, Anna Boyd, said “Studying abroad is an eye-opening experience. There are so many reasons why studying abroad is worth it: new experiences, gaining an international understanding, different teaching styles, easier access, top university degrees and potentially lower costs are just some of them. Apart from the personal enrichment, these experiences and new skills learned will also shine on their CVs, which could help in securing employment. I’m looking forward to meeting Jersey students to discuss their options. When thinking about higher education, preparation is key. I guarantee there will always be surprises!”
