Electricals recycling amnesty gets results

01 October 2013

Islanders delivered 16 tonnes of hairdryers, toasters, DVD players and other household electrical items in just four hours last Saturday[28 September] during Transport and Technical Services' recycling amnesty.

To encourage Islanders to recycle household electricals, TTS set up temporary electrical recycling collection points around the Island. Many primary and secondary schools joined in, set up their own collection points, and collected 1.2 tonnes.

TTS recycling manager Emma Richardson-Calladine said "Thank you to everyone who used our amnesty event as a reason to clear out their old and broken electricals. All of the electricals items collected will be exported to our specialist recycling partner in the south of England where all of the component parts will be separated for recycling. It is so important that electrical goods aren’t thrown away in the general rubbish and we hope that this event has been a reminder to act responsibly with your waste."

Raise awareness

This was the second electricals amnesty event organised by TTS. The first, in 2012, collected 15 tonnes of electricals and helped to raise awareness about the importance of separating all electricals items from general rubbish.

Electrical items shouldn’t be thrown away with household rubbish as they contain metals and potentially hazardous chemicals but should be taken to the Household Recycling Centre (Gate 4 Bellozanne) which opens Monday to Saturday from 7.30am to 4.15pm and on Sundays from 8am – 12.45pm.
