St Helier event for mental health day

06 October 2014

A number of Jersey’s voluntary sector organisations are working with the Island’s Health and Social Services Department (HSSD) on an event to mark World Mental Health Day 2014.

World Mental Health Day is held annually on 10 October and aims to raise awareness of mental health issues.

In collaboration with many of the organisations working to have a positive impact on the mental health issues facing Islanders, HSSD will be holding a drop-in session at Liberty Wharf in St Helier on Friday 10 October from 11 am to 4 pm.

The event will offer visitors the chance to learn about their mental health, why it is important and how everyone can improve their health and wellbeing. It will also provide ideas for supporting family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

“The event is intended to gather people to talk about mental health, to raise awareness and to challenge stigma,” said Service Manager and Head of Nursing for Adult Mental Health, Marie Leeming.

“It is also an opportunity for Islanders to find out more about the help and support that is available – the organisations working in this area can make a real difference for those who face mental health challenges, and we want to showcase the services that are on offer.”

The community organisations involved are:
  • MIND Jersey
  • Jersey Alzheimer's Association
  • Jersey Employment Trust
  • Jersey BEAT (eating disorder group)
  • Jersey Talking Therapies
  • TOP (Triumph Over Phobias)
  • Samaritans of Jersey
  • the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children)

The event will also provide information for those who are interested in applying to become a registered mental health nurse in Jersey, with members of staff from the mental health service and the nurse education department available to discuss career opportunities.

Mrs Leeming added: “This isn’t an event that’s targeted at specific groups – mental health is everybody’s business, and that’s why we are stressing that all are welcome at Liberty Wharf to come and find out more.”

Anyone who is interested in becoming a mental health nurse but cannot make the event should email the HSS Higher Education Department for more information.
