On-island degrees in nursing and midwifery

24 March 2014

New degree courses allowing Jersey students to train for careers as midwives, mental health nurses or children’s nurses will be launched later this year. Combining off-Island study with practical work experience in Jersey, the three-year courses will be delivered in partnership with the University of Chester.

The new courses follow the introduction of a pre-registration Nursing Degree in 2013 - the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult Field), which has yearly intakes in September.

There's a total of 10 places available on courses starting in September 2014:
  • four places for student midwives
  • two places for student children’s nurse
  • four places for student mental health nurses
Anyone who is interested should email Julie Mesny.

"It is the first time midwifery students and child field nurses have had the chance to access a place on the programme on the Island,” said Julie Mesny, Head of Nursing and Midwifery Education.

“This is a significant milestone and we are very excited about the prospect of being able to offer this combined model of degree. Health and Social Services has been offering the mental health field student programme for the past eight years, however, this degree course is also a new model for the Island.”

Jane Harris, Deputy Head of Midwifery, Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Chester, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Jersey to provide an established, innovative and well evaluated programme of Midwifery education. For the past two years the programme has scored 100% satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey.
“It’s fair to say there has been a surge of interest in careers in midwifery and on average we have 700 applicants for the course, which equates to 25 applicants for each place, making a highly competitive area.”

Andy Gibbs, Careers Jersey’s Head of Lifelong Learning and Skills, said “All of these areas are very popular choices for Jersey students and the opportunity, that has arisen through the partnership between Health and the University of Chester, to offer a Jersey-based course is a great addition to our local degree provision.”
