Prince's Trust success recognised

​​Four disadvantaged young people who have turned their lives around with the help of the Prince’s Trust were recognised at an awards ceremony on 17 September.

At a special presentation at Government House, Izzy Kelly, 15, from St Clement; David King, 21, from St Helier; Sam Murphy, 22, from St Helier; and Alicia Mead, 23, from St Helier; won awards after overcoming difficulties in their lives and developing new skills to improve their future prospects. The achievements of six other finalists were also recognised.

David, who was presented with the Team award by Lieutenant-Governor Sir John McColl, joined The Prince’s Trust programme after he had been through a period of instability in his home life and been unemployed for several months. He did a 12-week personal development course that helped him develop a range of skills, including leadership skills, and complete a successful work placement with the States of Jersey Information Services at Cyril Le Marquand House.

David said “It was a great opportunity and I was shocked but pleased to achieve the award. I felt we were all winners.”

Four Prince's Trust programmes are delivered in Jersey by the Youth Service. Dermot Finch, regional director for the Prince’s Trust, said “I’d like to offer Izzy, David, Sam and Alicia, many congratulations for winning Prince’s Trust awards. It was great to be involved in honouring these inspirational young people by recognising their incredible achievements. They’ve all proved that with the right support, you really can accomplish your goals.”

Last year, The Prince’s Trust, which tackles youth unemployment  across the UK, worked with 210 disadvantaged young people in Jersey. Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education.

Senator Philip Ozouf, Treasury Minister from the States of Jersey, has supported the Trust. He said “It was a special night for all of our 10 finalists, but Izzy, David, Sam and Alicia’s stories of triumph really stood out, thanks to support from The Prince’s Trust. I’d like to wish them all the very best for the future.”
