New contract signed to support recycling targets

30 April 2014

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) has awarded a new contract for receiving and processing recyclable inert material such as stone and rubble to AAL Recycling Ltd (AAL).

Following a competitive tendering process, AAL's contract means that during the next five years, it will be responsible for receiving and processing recyclable inert material from the local construction and demolition industry at the Aggregates Recycling Facility at La Collette.

Materials received will be processed on site and recycled into secondary aggregates which can be used in the local construction industry.

Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said "Aggregates recycling is well established in the Island, however this contract is a major step forward as it supports much greater recycling within the local construction and demolition industry. Recycling is at the heart of this contract so that the Island benefits from the value that remains in the inert waste material generated from development projects."

Managing Director of AAL, Alan Langlois, said "AAL Recycling has been successfully recycling Jersey’s inert waste material for seven years and we are excited by this opportunity to further enhance the rate of recovery. We intend to explore innovative ways to increase the Island’s inert waste recycling rate and we are dedicated to working with all of the pertinent stakeholders to ensure that Jersey’s precious inert resources continue to be preserved where possible while the Island’s inert waste is processed into high quality products we can all be proud of."

The new contract will come into force on 4 August 2014.
