Primary schools encourage Islanders to Turn It Off

25 November 2014

From today (Tuesday 25 November) Islanders can get free light switch stickers which encourage lights to be switched off.

As part of Eco-Active's Turn It Off campaign, 11 primary schools took part a competition to design a light switch cover and the two winning stickers have been produced and can be picked up for free from The Powerhouse tills.

The stickers are also being sent to all Island schools, States departments and are being offered to Eco-Active businesses.

The Energy Efficiency Service’s outreach and administration officer, Holly Lefebvre, said “All the schools taking part are Eco Schools, and this is an opportunity for their eco-committee to put together campaigns that encourage other pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community to save energy.”

Winning schools

Each school chose one winning pupil from both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, all of whom received a pair of ice skating tickets. A judging panel selected an overall winner from both age groups.

In the younger age group, Rodrigo from St Mary’s School took top prize and Nile from St Martin’s School and Max from JCG came second and third respectively.

In Key Stage 2, Xavier from Les Landes School was chosen as the winner followed closely by Dylan from St Luke’ s and Ruby from St Martin's School.

Rodrigo & Max’s winning designs have been turned into light switch stickers.

Homes can save £40 per year

The sticker competition was part of the Turn It Off campaign, an Eco-Active initiative to get people to turn off equipment that isn’t being used.

A typical home will save between £40 and £70 a year just by switching appliances off at the plug rather than leaving them on standby.

The Turn It Off campaign is running throughout November and resources are available on the States website.
